The Water Institute recently hosted a delegation from the University of Riau, Indonesia for a joint workshop on nature-based solutions for climate adaptation and peatland management.
The purpose of the workshop was to share information on respective peatland research programs, discuss best practices for the design and establishment of university research institutes and to explore potential collaborative opportunities.
Indonesian delegates Sofyan Husein Siregar, Agus Ika Putra, Delita Zul, Yohannes Firzal, Sigit Sutikno, Muhamad Yusa and Yuana Nurulita presented research on peatland management in Indonesia, the impact of the conversion of tropical peatlands on microbial activity and bacterial phyla, and Indonesian peat swamp Soil: Microorganism and biochemistry potency.
Thank you to Water Institute member Brent Doberstein for presenting on the great work happening at Waterloo on Disaster risk reduction and post-disaster recovery, and to Anabela Bonada from the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation for her talk on the use and value of natural infrastructure and Jean Lowry for presenting the Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing, and Ecosystem Sustainability Project (FINCAPES) project.
The Water Institute looks forward to expanding its international network in Indonesia and future research collaborations and student exchanges with the University of Riau.
