Congratulations to Water Institute faculty members Helen Jarvie and Merrin Macrae, both from the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, for receiving a prestigious award! Their paper, entitled Biogeochemical and climate drivers of wetland phosphorus and nitrogen release: Implications for nutrient legacies and eutrophication risk, has been recognized as the 2022Journal of Environmental Qualityoutstanding paper award winner.
Each year, the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America and associated journals recognize an outstanding group of authors, editors, and peer reviewers with annual awards presented at the ACS International Annual Meeting.
Articles that are eligible for the Journal Outstanding Paper Awards are published during the preceding two years. The articles undergo a selection process based on an evaluation of how the article has advanced knowledge in the profession, the effectiveness of communication, methodology, originality, and impact.
“We are honoured to receive this award. Climate change has profound implications for the quality and health of our rivers, lakes and watersheds. We combined hydrochemical and meteorological monitoring with novel high-frequency in-situ sensor measurements, to explore how and why wetlands switch from sinks to sources of nutrients. Our results showed that the changing climate has the potential to tip the balance towards greater nutrient release from wetlands, increasing downstream eutrophication risks.”
