Our Brain Injury Service treats people who are experiencing vision problems due to any acquired brain injury, including vision problems due to stroke, traumatic brain injury or concussion.
Following your injury, we can check the structural integrity of your eyes, as well as the surrounding eye muscles and the optic nerve. If there is obvious damage, we can either treat it directly or refer you to another health-care provider.
If there is no damage to the structure of the eye and no need for a change in glasses or contact lens prescriptions, we will check how well your vision system is functioning. We’ll complete an in-depth assessment to see how your eyes work both independently and together. Based on the results of these assessments, we may prescribe:
- Glasses, contact lenses, prisms and/or tints
- Vision therapy to help rebuild function
- Other visual aids that can help improve your vision or help you make the best use of the vision you have remaining
We can also connect you with our in-house psychotherapist to help you cope with the psychological and social impact of your injury. If required, we can also coordinate benefits between insurance and/or the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).
