Dr. Alicia Batten is Professor of Religious Studies and Theological Studies at Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on the origins and development of early Christianity within its ancient Mediterranean contexts, with particular emphasis on the Letter of James, social history, material culture, and the history of biblical interpretation.
Her scholarship examines early Christian communities through interdisciplinary approaches that integrate literary analysis, archaeology, and social theory. She has published extensively on early Christianity, dress and clothing in Mediterranean antiquity, and the reception of biblical texts, and is currently writing a major commentary on the Letter of James.
