Project updates

Wayfinding Update – March 2023

Since the last update, extensive work has been done to complete the fabrication and installation of all exterior wayfinding signage across the Waterloo campus. This work is now complete, and the university has a consistent, coordinated system of wayfinding to support our campus community.

This work was made possible thanks to the collaborative efforts of a range of individuals and groups across campus – special thanks to the Steering Committee and the Campus Wayfinding Advisory Group who provided direction, insight and support, and to Plant Operations for coordinating the design, fabrication and installation of the new wayfinding system.

With the first three phases of work now complete, additional opportunities and needs continue to be identified to enhance and expand the wayfinding program. As a result, an additional phase (Phase 4) has been approved to complete the following work:

  • Enhancements to existing exterior wayfinding (e.g., additional signage types)
  • Exterior wayfinding for campuses in Cambridge, Kitchener and Stratford
  • Interior wayfinding system finalization and documentation

Additional details about this work will be posted over the next few months as details are finalized – please visit this site for updates.

Wayfinding Update – July 28, 2020

Over the Summer, much work has been done to improve wayfinding on the Waterloo campus.

Designed to help people reach their destinations quickly, signs for buildings, paths, maps, parking and roads have been installed and, later this summer, entrance way signs will appear. When finished, the University will have a consistent, coordinated and uniquely designed system that integrates pedestrian and vehicular wayfinding with public transit and parking.

Starting in August work will begin on moving (if they are to be retained) and removing (if they are being replaced) existing signs. This operation was split from the installation phase to ensure adequate signing was maintained at all times and to reduce the cost of removal by doing it all at once. This work is expected to be complete by the Fall.

Please note that crews, excavation equipment, trucks, trailers and cement trucks continue to be on site and that periodic, short-term road, sidewalk and pathway restrictions may be required. Access for emergency vehicles and those with accessibility needs will be maintained throughout. While systems will be in place to manage safety for all, use caution as you approach any site under construction.

Your patience in these instances is appreciated and you are asked to please use caution as you approach any site under construction.

Wayfinding Update – February 17, 2020

Recently, new building signs were installed across main campus. They are the first wave of a program created to provide a positive campus experience by helping people reach their destinations quickly and confidently. When complete, the full strategy will provide a consistent, coordinated and uniquely designed system that integrates pedestrian and vehicular wayfinding with public transit and parking.

Starting April 1, installation of pedestrian, parking and Campus Housing signage will begin, and in preparation, construction of sign bases will commence Monday, March 2. Please be advised that installation crews, excavation equipment, trucks, trailers and cement trucks will be on site for this part of the process.

See the planned dates for base installation.

In order to complete the work in a safe and swift manner, there will be periodic, short-term road, sidewalk and pathway restrictions on campus. Access for emergency vehicles and those with accessibility needs will be maintained at all times. All efforts will be made to manage traffic in the area for the safety of students, faculty, staff, visitors and workers.

Your patience in these instances is appreciated and you are asked to please use caution as you approach any site under construction.
