During the first meeting that is scheduled before or after the kick-off event, both the mentor and mentee should talk about their expectations for the program, and create their own program guidelines. Use this time to really plan out your strategy for communication, timelines, etc. You will need to fill out the Mentorship Agreement Form before the end of May. The mentee will submit it via LEARN.

Here are some suggestions for what to discuss at your first meeting:

Roles and Expectations:

  • What are the roles and responsibilities of the mentor and mentee?
  • What does a successful mentoring relationship look like from the point of view of each person?
  • What are your goals for the program together?
  • As a mentee, what skills do you want to develop during this program?
  • What do you hope to gain from this program? What are your expectations?

Logistics:

  • When will your next meeting occur? Who will call who?
  • What is your preferred method of communication? Phone call? Video Chat?
  • How frequently will you be in contact? Should the mentee send an email every time they have a question, or make a list of questions to bring to the next meeting?
  • How will we measure the success of the partnership?
  • How will feedback be given?
  • Who will be in charge of taking notes?

Ways to prep for future meetings:

  • Create an agenda for each meeting. This can contain information such as, a recap from the last meeting, discussion questions, new discussion topics.
  • Schedule meetings in a calendar.
  • Have a shared document or place to keep resources, such as a google drive folder.
