Making Career Choices Panel

Four engineers who decided to pursue different career paths share their experiences, stories and advise through a panel session. Panelists will be give a short introduction about their career choices and paths. Introductions will be followed by a question and answer session where the audience is encouraged to ask questions. 

Panelists:

Stephanie Berry

Stephanie Berry is an Operations Support EIT at Shell’s Sarnia Manufacturing Centre located in Corunna, Ontario.   Stephanie is a graduate of the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Applied Science - Chemical Engineering and joined Shell as a new graduate in 2007.  Since joining Shell, she has held three different Operations Support EIT roles covering distillation, reforming and hydrotreating process technologies.  Stephanie is also a member of the Shell Campus Ambassador Program for the University of Waterloo.

Lynn Pilmoor, P.Eng , MBA is a Professional Engineer who completed her MBA (Finance major) while working full-time at IBM as a Construction Engineer.  The MBA allowed Lynn to move out of a technical role in to a business role at IBM where she moved up through the Sales Organization.  Since leaving IBM,  Lynn has held several Sales Leadership roles in the technology industry.  Lynn is currently in transition with the option of going back to her technical roots or continuing on in her business career.

Diane Freeman is a Professional Engineer and Fellow of Engineers Canada.  Diane is an Associate with Conestoga-Rovers & Associates Limited and a Councillor for the City of Waterloo.  In 2010-2011 Diane served as the President of Professional Engineers Ontario. 

Diane is a board member with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Grand River Hospital Corporation, the KW Symphony, Engineers Canada, the Ontario College of Veterinarians and the Air and Waste Management Association.

Associate Professor, PEng, Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Lab-on-a-Chip Technology.

Parallel Sessions

1) Leadership in Engineering

Many engineers move into management positions, one such person will speak about how to get there, tips for managing staff and other leadership challenges.

Alourdes Sully has over 25 years of engineering and business experiences in Telecommunications and Energy Industries. She joined Hydro One in 1999 and has worked on many critical infrastructure projects including replacement of the Analog Microwave Network by Synchronous Optical Networks (SONET), Network Management, Network Synchronization, Data Communication Network, NERC Cyber-security and Wide Area Network (WAN). She led a multi-disciplinary engineering design team responsible for Distributed Generation Connections and worked on Smart Grid and Advanced Distribution System.

2) Working in Remote Locations

Jessica Willemsen is the manager of the mobile maintenance shops at Shell Albian’s Jackpine Mine, located ~75km north of Fort McMurray.  She started her career with Shell Canada as a petroleum engineer in Calgary after graduating from McMaster University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and Management in 1999.  Jessica is no stranger to northern living, having grown up in northern Ontario.  She now makes her home in Fort McMurray with her husband and their two boys.

Becoming a Professional Engineer

Jeannette Chau, P.Eng. will provide an overview of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), the licensing and regulatory body for professional engineers, and the requirements for licensure.

Keynote Speaker - Michele Harradence

Michele is the General Manager of Shell’s Sarnia Manufacturing Complex, a 75,000 barrel per day refinery and petrochemical facility located just south of Sarnia, Ontario.

She has worked for Shell in Canada since 1998 holding a number of increasingly responsible roles and has sat on several business leadership teams in Shell including Shell’s Heavy Oil Leadership Team, Upstream Americas Contracting and Procurement Leadership Team and North American Retail Leadership Team.

Michele obtained her degree in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario and her law degree from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. 

In 2012 Michele chaired the Nunavut Study Group of the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference.  

Michele is married and has 2 children.  They Harradence family enjoys dividing their summer holidays between Grand-Barachois, New Brunswick and Waskesiu Lake, Saskatchewan.
