Accelerating Climate Change Education (ACE) project

For professional degree programs of accounting, architecture, planning and engineering

In April 2024, the Waterloo Climate Institute initiated a project supported with funding by Natural Resources Canada's Climate Adaptation Program to help accelerate the integration of climate change adaptation (CCA) knowledge and skills into professional degree programs at universities and colleges in Canada. This three-year project will focus on Accounting, Architecture, Planning, and Engineering (Civil, Environmental and Systems) programs.

Project Components

The project comprises three interconnected components:

Component A - Needs Assessment: Undertake a national, holistic review of current climate change adaptation education practices and needs in the professional degree programs across Canada.  Read more here about the survey.

Component B - Curriculum Revisions at University of Waterloo: Design and integrate new CCA curriculum into our own professional programs, including experiential activities that support cross-professional learning, and in alignment with professional associations’ evolving competency development.  Read more here about what we’re doing and how.

Component C - Communities of Practice: Establish and/or support national communities of practice to advance the integration of CCA curriculum into professional programs in post-secondary institutions across Canada through capacity building and information sharing.
