Sharing a vision: Waterloo at 100

Recently President and Vice-Chancellor Vivek Goel publicly launched the highly anticipated Waterloo at 100with our University community. This vision reveals what the University will look like in 2057 – a hundred years after its founding – and will act as the touchstone for Waterloo over the next 33 years as we “continue to be bold and unconventional [and] help shape a better future for humanity and the planet.”

Waterloo at 100 imagines our University as a community of curious, collaborative, innovative and entrepreneurial problem-solvers and leaders who seek to understand and identify equitable and sustainable solutions for the future of humanity and our planet. The vision offers a clear value proposition that states who we are today and will remain in the future:

“We are a leading global research-intensive university, renowned for entrepreneurship and innovation, providing co-op and work-integrated learning at scale with impact.”

As we continue to drive positive change worldwide, Waterloo at 100 calls upon us to build on our strengths in research, entrepreneurship, co-operative education and work-integrated learning – as well as our connection with our thriving local community – and to empower the world’s brightest minds to develop new models of learning and discovery. Key to our future is collaboration within the University and its disciplines, and with partners across sectors, locally and globally, as we scale our work at the intersections of traditional fields to develop solutions to urgent global challenges.

The vision embeds our goals to create fair and just societies, safeguard our natural resources, develop responsible technologies and promote longer, healthier lives and a sustainable planet that remains home to all of its species. Waterloo at 100 also advocates for equal access to opportunities enabling everyone to reach their full potential.

To the many alumni and friends who contributed to this aspirational and achievable vision, thank you for sharing your experiences, insights and expertise. I am excited about continuing these conversations with you all as we work together to create this flourishing future for our University, humanity and the planet.
