Understanding Conflict

When we experience perceived opposing goals, viewpoints, or interests with others around us, we stall in our ability to solve problems. Understanding what conflict is and how it shows up in our lives is an important first step in resolving it. In this workshop, you will complete the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Model Instrument to gain insight into five different conflict-handling behaviours, and whether you might be overusing or under using one or more of them. Based on a mix of individual reflection, small and large group discussion, we will explore what conflict is, how it appears at work, and introduce strategies and tools to begin addressing it productively.

Creating a Supportive Workplace for Neurodivergent Employees

Most work settings have been designed by neurotypical people, for neurotypical people, yet an estimated 15-20% of Canadians identify as neurodivergent. Many highly skilled neurodivergent individuals encounter workplace barriers that affect their ability to thrive in the workplace. In this workshop we will highlight the lived experience of two forms of neurodivergence: autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We will identify common workplace barriers and challenges and review recommended practices that support neurodivergent employees.  

Participants will review their workplace from a neurodivergent perspective, explore the hidden curriculum in their workplace, and discuss ways to incorporate recommendations that would benefit neurodivergent and neurotypical employees, alike. We will use interactive large group activities and small group discussions in break-out rooms throughout the workshop. Recognizing that not everyone enjoys interactive activities, we encourage all participants to respect their individual comfort level with participation.  This 2-hour workshop includes a short break.

Giving and Receiving Feedback with Intention

Whether giving or receiving feedback, executing the process well can feel daunting if you’re not prepared. Taking time to think through and refine how to deliver feedback to a colleague can set both of you up for a successful, beneficial conversation. On the other side, understanding how you receive feedback and how you can be receptive to feedback can help you be more coachable. This workshop will spend time unpacking the content participants explore in the Foundations of Giving and Receiving Feedback course. This practical, experiential workshop will focus on tools, reflection and discussion that participants can use in their professional and personal lives.

Foundations of Giving and Receiving Feedback

LEARN (asynchronous)

Understanding the fundamentals of giving and receiving feedback is a crucial first step to being able to experience the process productively. Feedback does not need to be stressful, particularly when a culture of feedback is created within a team. Be part of fostering this culture within your department by gaining awareness of the feedback loop, recognizing when to offer feedback, and how to receive feedback with grace. Participants will also have the opportunity to navigate through practice scenarios, as well as create a document to articulate their own personal feedback preference, which they can share with colleagues, managers or others with whom they work closely.  

Foundations of Giving and Receiving Feedback is a two-week, self-paced asynchronous online learning experience on Learn. Participants will have two weeks from when the course opens to complete the material. It will take approximately 2 hours total to complete the course. At the end of the course, participants will complete a mini knowledge-check quiz and earn a Workday learning record.  

Registration information: As an asynchronous course, all materials will be on LEARN. Staff who sign up will be sent an email with instructions regarding how to access the Learn course. If you have any questions please email ohd@uwaterloo.ca.

Cheating Myths & Realities

​Amanda McKenzie and Julie Piatek from the Office of Academic Integrity will host a 60-minute workshop that explores common myths about cheating as well as the new realities facing instructors in an era of ubiquitous generative artificial intelligence.

Participants will:

  • Learn about students who cheat and why.
  • Understand the pervasiveness of generative artificial intelligence in academia.
  • Explore options for identifying cheating.
  • Consider ways to dissuade cheating behaviour.
