Chrysopsis mariana (L.) Ell. is native to the eastern United States.  It is the only x=4 species in the genus and has flagelliform hairs that are different than found on other species. Hairs on the stem and leaves can twist forming a distinctive appearance that is not wooly like in other species.   It includes 2x (2n=8), 4x (2n=16), 6x (2n=24) and 8x (2n=32) races that have different distribution patterns.  Only the 6x races occurs outside of Florida (Semple & Chinnappa 1986).  See Semple (2006 FNA).
