Pityopsis graminifolia (Michx.) Small var. tenuifolia Semple & Bowers is ther small headed diploid race that occurs throughout much of the range of the species in the southeastern United States. It has been treated in the past as Pityopsis microcephala Small, Heterotheca microcephala (Small) Shinners, Chrysopsis graminifolia (Michx.) Ell. var. microcephala (Small) Cronquist, P. graminifolia var. microcephala (Small) Semple, Heterotheca graminifolia (Michx.) Nutt. var. tenuifolia (Torr.) Gandhi & R.D. Thomas, and Pityopsis tenuifolia (Torrey) Nesom. It tends to bloom earlier in the fall than var. latifolia. The variety is diploid with 2n=18. See Semple (2006 FNA).
