Proposals must be submitted through the Proposal Submission FormPlease ensure your proposal submission includes the necessary information outlined in the CDW3 Submission instructions

Note: If you are planning on submitting multiple proposals, this form will need to be submitted for each proposal

Proposals are due September 16, 2024. Sept 30, 2024.

The theme of CDW3 is Current Issues in Design, Design Education, and Design Research.  We are looking for a range of contributions from completed works, to works-in-progress, to new ideas. Some potential foci for submissions are given below, but proposals outside of these ideas are also welcome:

  1. Design pedagogy and learning in co-curricular and extra-curricular settings (e.g., work-integrated learning, hackathons, design competitions, etc.)

  2. Large Language Models and GPTs in design practice, teaching, and research

  3. Advancing design research in Canada

  4. Development of attitudes towards engineering design

  5. Fostering inclusivity and diversity in design

  6. Interdisciplinary insights on design

  7. New tools and technologies for design and design education

  8. Design process for improved sustainability

Structure of the CDW3

New this year, the event will be structured into workshop blocks, each around a common theme, purpose, or idea.  Each workshop block will include a small number of presentations where existing work can be shared, followed by extended dialog among the attendees. The workshop blocks will be action-oriented, with outcomes that could include new collaborations in, and/or strategies for, design teaching, research or practice.

In addition, there will be one block envisioned as an Ideas Marketplace, similar in concept to a poster session (however, a poster will not be required), that will enable more one-on-one interactions between participants.

Participation at CDW3

The Canadian Design Workshop 3 will be held in person from Dec 12-13, 2024 at the University of Waterloo. However, we acknowledge that not everyone can travel to Waterloo: to ensure inclusiveness of the conference, we will consider a limited number of participants to be online if they can contact us about this before the submission deadline explaining why their participation needs to be online.

Attendees are invited to propose one or more contributions. CDW remains a small conference with an emphasis on group discussion and activities; therefore, priority for registration will be given to participants with accepted proposals. If you wish to participate in CDW3 without a submitted proposal, please contact the organizing committee with a short description of your interest in attending.

The CDW organizing committee, and participants will co-create the event contents and structure. In their submission, participants will select one of three formats:

  1. (Co-)Chairing a workshop block. In your proposal include:

  • A focus (from the list above, or your own) relevant to current design practice, design research, or design education

  • 2-4 proposed presenters to share completed work or works-in-progress from at least 2 institutions. CDW3 organizing committee can also assist by identifying potential speakers from other participant submissions

  • An action-oriented workshop activity to foster collaboration and 2-5 workshop outcomes

  1. Sharing a completed work or work-in-progress within a workshop block.

  • These presentations could describe design or design education research, design theory and/or methods, or an evidence-based practice of design or design education

  1. Participating in the Idea Marketplace.

  • Participants are invited to propose a new idea/topic (e.g., a new idea/topic for a research project, teaching philosophy, larger-scale design collaboration) to be discussed 1-on-1 with other workshop attendees. The goal would be to gather initial feedback on the idea, find potential collaborators, etc.

Full submission requirement for each type are available in the submission form.
