Artist Statement:
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples may be the most important piece of legislature before our government in this generation. Indigenous rights, Reconciliation, The Truth and Reconciliation Commission; all of these issues have moved to the forefront of our news, especially in light of Canada's 150th anniversary, but the majority of Canadians are not aware of the rights contained in the declaration. I believe many Canadians of privilege would be surprised to know the basic level of the rights contained within the declaration. I've connected several articles to images that are familiar and comforting to many non-indigenous Canadians, with the goal of helping the viewer to put themselves in the place of the Indigenous Community. Sometimes, we need to feel what it's like to be the oppressed before we understand what it means to be privilege.
