Project Ploughshares will be hosting an online webinar to discuss the TPNW on January 29, 2021 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. on Zoom.
January 22, 2021 marked a historic milestone for nuclear disarmament as the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) came into force, officially becoming part of international law.
Adopted by 122 states in 2017, the TPNW began a 99-day countdown to entry into force last October, when Honduras became the 50th state to ratify it.
While people around the world and many Canadians are celebrating, however, the Canadian government is not. As a member of the North Atlandic Treaty Organization (NATO), Canada continues to view nuclear deterrence as a legitimate security doctrine - and to oppose the TPNW.
