Local Futures has global impact at the United Nations

Reflections from the 2026 High-Level Political Forum

Grebel Peace Incubator organization, Local Futures, announced that staff Laura Carr-Pries and Jon Beale were “Going to the United Nations!” in July to participate in the 2026 High Level Political Forum (HLPF).

The HLPF unites countries and organizations to evaluate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Local Futures may be based in Waterloo Region, however, this project seeks to advance the localization of SDGs throughout Canada. This meant Jon and Laura were a natural fit as members of the Canadian delegation to the United Nations (UN).

In addition to attending and participating in various events, Jon moderated Canada’s “official side-event” at the conference: Cities that work for people: Connecting social policy and infrastructure for resilient communities.
