Jean Hein, editor of Chem 13 News magazine has won the Irwin Talesnick Award at ChemEd 2017. It is presented to individuals who have made major contributions to the ChemEd conferences and chemical education. The award is named after Irwin Talesnick who has been inspiring chemistry teachers with his demonstrations, innovations and leadership since the first ChemEd conference in 1973.
Thirteen individuals have received this award previously: Irwin Talesnick, Bette Bridges, Richard Furlough, Larry Flinn, Elaine “Bunny” Jacobson, George Hague,
Lew Brubacher, Andy Cherkas, Pat “Funky” Funk, Harvey Gendreau, Jeff Hepburn, Pat Vance and John Eix.

“I am honoured to receive this award and to be part of this wonderful community.I attended my first ChemEd conference in Texas 10 years ago, and I was hooked.I was blown away by the amazing community of teachers, all willing to share and engage in the challenges of teaching high school chemistry. It was clear that Chem 13 News magazine was a valuable resource to this community, and why it had been involved in this grassroots conference from the beginning and continues to actively support it. The enthusiasm of teachers makes the job of editor a great pleasure. I have enjoyed making life-long friends with those who share my passion, curiosity and humour.”
