Growing Food as Climate Action Social
Join the Waterloo Climate Institute and GreenHouse for a walking social! Participants will learn about different gardens and food growing initiatives on campus while munching on some local snacks.
Starting at the Shatitsirótha' (sa-di-gee-ROW-da) Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre garden near United College!
When: Wednesday, June 12 - 2:00PM-3:45PM
Where: Meet outside at United College (rain or shine)
Details: Participants will be able to visit campus gardens and food growing initiatives while visiting:
- Shatitsirótha' (sa-di-gee-ROW-da) Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre garden
- United College Indigenous garden
- Sustainability Office Community garden
- North Campus Community garden
At each stop, participants will learn about each initiative, engage in dynamic activities, support the gardens with active gardening, and snack on local produce to get inspired.
*Please note this is a walking tour and participants will be asked to walk from garden to garden (est. 30 min walking)
Join GreenHouse and Waterloo Climate Institute for an interactive series that looks at food as climate action.
- May 23: Strawberry Social - Join GreenHouse and the Climate Institute for a strawberry planting and social workshop. Each participant will take home a strawberry seedling to care for. We will explore the significance of the strawberry from the Haudenosaunee teachings and share a strawberry drink to celebrate spring.
- June 12: Growing food as Climate Action Social - Participants will learn about different gardens and food growing initiatives on campus. Starting at the Shatitsirotha (sa-di-gee-ROW-da) four medicines garden and the United College's Indigenous garden, then onto two community gardens! Enjoy local snacks along the way!
- July 18: Food as Climate Action Social - This interactive social will allow participants to learn, share, and socialize while learning about food insecurity and food deserts as well as Indigenous local land in the Waterloo Region. Meet people, enjoy snacks, connect!
- September 14: Eat Local: Tour & Shopping at the Kitchener Market – This event will take participants to the Kitchener Market for a tour of the market and an opportunity to buy local seasonal veggies and food.
