From August 20 to 24, the University will welcome more than 150 top researchers, graduate students and industry representatives to campus as the Faculties of Engineering and Science host the 18thCanadian Semiconductor Science and Technology Conference (CSSTC). This is the first time that Waterloo will be hosting the CSSTC, which over the last 35 years has established itself as one of the most important platforms for Canadian scientists and engineers working in the field of semiconductors.

Professors Zbigniew Wailewski and Dayan Ban from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have organized this conference and will be joined by colleagues from Australia, China, India, Japan, Sweden, and the USA.

Among the conference activities includes 44 oral and 42 poster presentations, as well as 15 invited talks featuring leading Canadian, American, and Chinese research teams. Additionally, there will be three invited tutorial lectures given by Professor Gianluigi Botton from McMaster University, Professor Safa Kasap from the University of Saskatchewan, and Professor Na Young Kim from the University of Waterloo.

The conference will also feature three plenary lectures, delivered by Professor Manijeh Razeghi from Northwestern University, Dr. Meyya Meyyappan from NASA’s Ames Research Center and Professor Kimberly Thelander from Lund University, all world-renowned scientists in their fields, who will bring in the latest scientific and technological advances in novel quantum photonics, next-generation nanoelectronics and one-dimensional semiconductor materials.

The Wednesday afternoon research mixer event will feature presentations from the Region of Waterloo’s technology incubators, including Velocity, the Accelerator Centre, and Communitech, as well as presentations from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). A poster session will follow.

This event is designed to foster new research partnerships, promote technology transfer and commercialization, and help to identify funding strategies.

The conference will take place in STC 1012.

The conference is sponsored and supported by the University of Waterloo, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, CMC, IEEE, NSERC, Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology and 10 industry partners.
