The School of Accounting and Finance has announced that Professor Emeritus Stanley Laiken was granted Honorary Membership at the recent annual meeting of CPA Ontario. For more than four decades, Laiken, affectionately known as Uncle Stan by students and colleagues, provided distinguished service to the accounting profession as an educator specifically in the area of taxation. Honorary membership is sparingly bestowed with Laiken being only the 2nd recipient. Laiken’s membership comes at a fitting time as September 2017 also marks the 100th anniversary of the introduction of federal income tax legislation in Canada.
Laiken’s contribution to the accounting profession in Ontario and the impact of that contribution resonates beyond the university students and aspiring CPAs he’s taught. Laiken’s co-authorship of the go-to tax textbook, Introduction to Federal Income Taxation in Canada, is used in 37 universities across Canada and has assisted in demystifying one of our nation’s most challenging pieces of legislation.
“Stan has made a profound impact on our profession over many decades and has scrupulously and diligently upheld the objects of CPA Ontario and its legacy bodies. I can think of no one more deserving of an Honorary Membership in CPA Ontario,” says CPA Ontario Leadership Fellow Dave Vert, who recommended Laiken for the award.
An Honorary CPA is an elected membership for individuals who have given valuable and distinguished service or have made outstanding and prominent contribution to the accounting profession in Ontario. A recognized expert in the field of taxation, Laiken has been published in numerous professional journals and magazines, was the first tax professor to receive the L.S. Rosen Outstanding Educator Award and is a holder of a Canada Council Doctoral Fellowship.
Jim Barnett, interim Director for the SAF notes “Stan lives and breathes tax. He has an amazing ability to take a complex topic, break it into smaller pieces, and make it understandable.”

What is accelerated aging in space teaching researchers about chronic disease, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular aging on earth? Find out at the first Research Talks of the Fall 2017 series with Waterloo Kinesiology Professor Richard Hughson.
Please register for the event scheduled for Friday, October 6 from noon to 1:00 p.m. as seating is limited. Light refreshments will be provided but feel free to bring your lunch.
Professor Hughson is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Schlegel Research Chair in Vascular Aging and Brain Health. Although astronauts have become unlikely models for studying accelerated “aging-like” changes in the body, the stiffening in the arteries implies that a link exists between weightlessness and cardiovascular aging.
Research Talks is a regular series hosted by the Office of Research and supported by the Research Support Fund to celebrate research and provide an opportunity for Waterloo faculty, staff, and students to learn about the world-class and life-changing research underway at Waterloo.

It's the end of an era for the Student Life Centre as Airways Transit has suspended its daily Scheduled Toronto Airporter Service from the Student Life Centre effective immediately. Airways will continue to offer service with an advance reservation by contacting them at 519-886-2121.
Declining ridership and the myriad competing options, such as GO Transit, Greyhound and ride sharing apps such as Uber are some of the reasons cited for the change in service.
Speaking of which, other transportation options continue to be available including:

Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
