Co-operative and Experiential Education celebrates career of Louise Buhlman

A message from Co-operative and Experiential Education (CEE).

Louise Buhlman.After more than 26 years of service at the University of Waterloo, Louise Buhlman is retiring.

Louise has spent most of her career in the Account Coordinator role in Co-operative and Experiential Education. Louise has consistently demonstrated her dedication to the students and employers of CEE and has been an invaluable member of the Co-operative Education team. Louise is known to be kind and welcoming to all those she encounters, especially new staff joining the team. Louise has played an important role as the social coordinator for the Co-op Services team, bringing staff together to celebrate successes and further develop the team atmosphere. Many staff have fond memories of gatherings and pool parties that Louise has hosted.

Louise will be remembered by her colleagues for her hard work and dedication, as well as her loving nature, generosity, and quick-witted sense of humor. Co-operative and Experiential Education wishes Louise all the best in her retirement!

Campus emergency communication system to be tested on June 28

A message from Information Systems & Technology (IST).

What is the impact? 

Emergency communication channels being tested include:

  • Tweets to @UWaterloo and @WatSAFEapp
  • WatSAFE mobile app
  • The ‘WatSAFE Desktop Notification’ on-screen pop-up for desktops and laptops
  • Portal alerts and push notifications

Messaging: The message displayed will read “TEST of the UW Emergency Notification System. During an actual emergency or threat you would receive instructions. No action is required.” More information regarding the emergency would be available at alert.uwaterloo.ca.

Approximately 15 minutes after the test activation message is sent, a deactivation message will display, “The test of the UW Emergency Notification System is complete.

In the event of a real emergency during this test, please contact Police Services at 519-888-4911, or ext. 22222. IMPORTANT: A new version of the desktop notification software is available to download for Mac.

Be sure to install the WatSAFE app on your device and WatSAFE Desktop Notification tool on your desktop/laptop to receive this test message, and more importantly, to stay informed of campus emergency situations. Visit the WatSAFE website for more details.

Indigenous History Month graduate student panel tomorrow

A message from the History department.

We are excited to announce our upcoming Graduate Student Panel for Indigenous History Month. This Wednesday, June 28, at 11:00 a.m. on Zoom, the History Anti-Racism Taskforce (HART) and the Tri-University Graduate Student Association (TUGSA) are hosting a graduate student panel in honour of Indigenous History Month. The panelists include C. Elizabeth Best, a Scoop survivor, Sarah Stravridis, an incoming JD student at the University of Ottawa, and Emma Smith, a Master's student from the University of Waterloo. The panel will be chaired by Dr. Susan Roy, an associate professor with the University of Waterloo.

C. Elizabeth Best - Identity, Memory, and Documents: How Structural Barriers Impact Scoop Survivor Histories 1945-2023.

C. Elizabeth Best is a Scoop survivor. They are Metis (maternal) and Vietnamese. Elizabeth was raised in foster care (Saskatchewan). They were adopted out to a non-Indigenous family (Ontario). Elizabeth is working on their PhD dissertation in History at York University. Elizabeth’s research interests are Indigenous activism, art, and child welfare policy in the post war period.

Sarah Stravridis - Disgraceful and Dangerous Conditions: Six Nations Indian Day School Records from Library and Archives Canada’s RG 10.

Sarah Stavridis is an incoming JD student at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Common Law and a recent graduate from Western University, where she worked as a Research Assistant in Indigenous History under Professor Cody Groat. Sarah and Cody’s work investigated Indian Day School records from Six Nations of the Grand River. She currently works on Residential School files as a Qualitative Data Analyst for Narratives Inc.

Emma Smith - Presenting Oral History in Regional Museum- My Curatorial Experience on Dibaajimowin: Stories from this Land.

Emma Smith is Aniishnaabe from Walpole Island First Nations. Emma is working on her Masters in History at the University of Waterloo. With a background in visual arts their research was originally focused on beadwork but has since shifted to curatorial work. As they joined a local team of researchers attempting to Indigenize the regions historical narrative. The culminating exhibition Dibaajimowin: Stories from this land can be viewed at the Woodland Cultural Centre right now. She currently works as the Program Coordinator of the Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre.

Waterloo making an impact at Collision conference and other notes

The survey wall with movable sticky notes.The University of Waterloo has engaged in a partnership with the Collision tech conference, taking place this week in Toronto from June 26 to 29 with tens of thousands of attendees expected from 140 countries. The overall aim is to raise the University's profile among tech innovators, media reps, and other key stakeholders, both nationally and internationally with a number of activations that will focus on our differentiators – innovation and entrepreneurship, co-op, research, and community.

"Waterloo is offering 3 'Masterclasses' at Collision this year, offering wisdom and thought leadership on topics like Generative AI, entrepreneurship and ethical technologies," says Michael Dorr, Associate Vice-President, Marketing and Brand Strategy. "In addition the Waterloo brand is on display a one of Collision's interactive Survey Walls, asking thought provoking questions about technology. Lastly, we have nearly 100 staff and faculty attending representing the University and championing its thought leadership and connections in tech, entrepreneurship, and local and international business."

Look for dispatches from the Collision conference to appear on the University's homepage (and maybe even the Daily Bulletin) in the coming days.

The Grad House will provide the lawn and the dye (and the drinks, but you've got to buy those), you just need to provide the white clothing. The event is free and no registration is required.

The staff from the Office of Indigenous Relations will be off-site attending a conference from Monday, June 26 to Wednesday, June 28. They will be delayed in responding to email inquiries.
