Retired civil engineering prof receives national honour
This article was originally published on the Faculty of Engineering website.
Dr. Reinhold Schuster, a retired civil engineering professor and a pioneer in cold-formed steel engineering, was awarded the Alfred F. Wong Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this month by the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC).
This national honour award recognizes individuals whose transformative contributions have advanced the structural steel industry through design, fabrication, construction, or academia.
During his tenure at the University of Waterloo, Schuster developed one of the first graduate courses in cold-formed steel and co-created a practitioner course for the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). His research has shaped Canadian and American engineering standards, establishing him as a global leader in the field.
Since 1978, Schuster has chaired the CSA S136 committee, overseeing Canada’s cold-formed steel design standard and spearheading the creation of the North American Specification, a milestone fostering cross-border collaboration in steel construction.
A celebrated mentor and advocate for sustainable construction, Schuster has guided generations of engineers. Earlier this year, he was also recognized with the 2024 CFSEI John P. Matsen Award for Distinguished Service.
Schuster received the award on November 13 at the 2024 CISC Canadian Steel Conference in Calgary, Alberta.
Check how busy the library is before you visit
A message from the Library.
Those wishing to find a spot to study at our Libraries can now check how busy our various study spaces are before you visit by going to the library homepage or bookmarking our page on Waitz to view live occupancy levels of specific floors or spaces within our libraries.
Newly installed sensors in the libraries anonymously scan bluetooth and WiFi signal activity to estimate the number of people within an area to 95 per cent accuracy without collecting any personal data.
Having a central place to study or work, whether that’s alone or with a group, is critically important to the campus community. Making it easier for library users to find those spaces saves people time and stress.
This sentiment was confirmed in the library user survey we conducted earlier this year, and this project is one example of our ongoing work to enhance and improve our spaces and services in support of the campus community.
Celebrating the career of Regina Vera-Quinn
A message from the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies.
At the end of December the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies will say "felicitaciones" to their beloved colleague, Regina Vera-Quinn.
Regina joined the Department over twenty years ago and has since filled our halls and our classrooms with bright smiles and infectious laughter. Regina has taught a variety of courses, but it is in the first-year program where she has shone the brightest. Every term, hundreds of students have benefitted from Regina's energy, dedication, and care. We are grateful to have enjoyed Regina's impact and now wish her a wonderful retirement, full of continued laughter and fun.
Thank you, Regina, for all you have done for us and our students. Enjoy this next chapter! We will miss you very much!
