GRADflix showcase winners named

The GRADflix showcase taking place at Federation Hall.

A message from Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs.

Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs is excited to announce the 2025 GRADflix showcase winners!

GRADflix is a research communication competition inviting graduate students from across campus to create a 60-second video showcasing their research. These videos highlight the students’ ability to combine research and creativity while enhancing their communication and creative skills, expanding their networks, and gaining visibility for their research.

"It was both an immense pleasure and a huge challenge to judge this year’s GRADflix videos. All of the finalists did an excellent job communicating their research and its impact using video, so it was difficult to decide which ones would emerge as the winners! All 20 of the videos are a testament to the important and valuable work our graduate students do here at Waterloo and to their creativity and communication skills," says Angela Rooke, GRADflix judge.

At the GRADflix showcase on February 4, the 20 finalists had their videos premiered to an audience of other graduate students, staff, faculty, friends, family, and community members. Alongside the video premieres, awards were announced for the first, second, third, and fourth-place winners, along with the first-ever Finalist's Choice award, where finalists voted for their favourite video created by a peer.

PhysiX Girls Matter inspires future students

Bushra Almalki in sunglasses volunteering at a Kids Science event.

By Sarah Fullerton. This article was originally published on the Science website.

First-year Physics and Astronomy student Bushra Almalki chose the University of Waterloo for its top-ranked Physics program. What she didn’t expect is how quickly she would become involved in campus life!

In just her first term, Almalki has become an active volunteer for Science Outreach, volunteering at events such as the Kids’ Science Open House and, most recently, the annual PhysiX: Girls Matter event.

For Almalki, volunteering at PhysiX was a full-circle moment. As a grade seven student, she attended the event, which sparked her interest in studying physics in high school. “The PhysiX event introduced me to physics with hands-on activities that made me want to learn more about it,” she says.

Almalki’s passion for the event stems from wanting to pay it forward by encouraging young girls to pursue science, so she jumped at the opportunity when the chance to volunteer at PhysiX arose. “It’s amazing to see kids get so excited about physics – it’s incredibly inspiring,” she says.

PhysiX: Girls Matter is one of the many events The Faculty of Science supports each year to empower the next generation of scientists through our engaging and interactive outreach program. If you want to learn more about our upcoming events and initiatives, join the Science Outreach mailing list or visit the Science Outreach page for more info.

Love Data Week graphic.

Just a reminder that Love Data Week has kicked off today - an international celebration of all things data that takes place every year in the run-up to Valentine's Day.

"The aim of this week is to celebrate data in all its forms, promote good research data management strategies, share data success and horror stories, and ask hard questions about the role of data in our lives," says a note from the Library. This year’s theme is “Whose data is it, anyway?”

Check out the Library website for a series of online events this week.
