About Primary Care

We’re here to support your physical health and well-being. Whether you need care for an illness, preventive services, or guidance to maintain a healthy lifestyle, our medical team provides confidential, high-quality care tailored to your needs.

Who can use these services

  • Current undergraduate and graduate students, both on study terms and co-op terms, living in Ontario

  • Visiting scholars, visiting researchers, visiting faculty and post-doctorates, without existing physicians in Ontario 

  • Dependents, without physicians in Ontario 

  • Sponsored family members, without physicians in Ontario  

These services are available for the duration of studies, and if needed, up to six months after graduation to support transfer of care. If you are outside of Ontario, please seek healthcare where you are. You can contact us to discuss your options and next steps.

General Primary Care services

We’re here to support your physical health and well-being. Whether you need care for an illness, preventive services, or guidance to maintain a healthy lifestyle, our medical team provides confidential, high-quality care tailored to your needs:

  • Care for illness or injury

  • Ongoing condition management for asthma, diabetes, or other chronic health needs

  • Prescriptions and renewals

  • Testing and lab work

  • Vaccinations and immunizations:

    • Protect yourself against communicable diseases (Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Influenza, Meningitis, Hepatitis B, HPV, COVID-19 and more. Campus Wellness offers individual assessments to get up to date on routine vaccines, determining if you require vaccinations, and providing vaccinations to those deemed eligible.  

  • Referrals to specialists or other supports when needed. 

  • Health and wellness advice on topics like nutrition, sleep, and fitness.

  • Sexual and reproductive health services, including birth control and emergency contraception, pregnancy and family planning support, STI testing + more.

  • Verification of Condition (VOC), AccessAbility and other medically indicated forms and certificates can be completed with the help of Campus Wellness physicians and nurse practitioners.

  • Treatment/removal of warts.

Referral and specialist services

Some services are provided by specialist staff to work with you and your unique needs. Please include details at the time of your booking to help us schedule the best health care professional for your appointment. 

Naturopathic Services

Campus Wellness values a holistic approach to your health and well-being. Our Naturopathic doctor blends western medical and Indigenous healing sciences together. 

  • Acupuncture and Reiki
  • Botanical medicine
  • Homeopathic and natural remedies
  • Clinical nutrition support and counselling
  • Healthy lifestyle and counselling/support
  • Additional health living testing options
  • Smudging and other ceremonial practices (available upon request for Indigenous students)

Nutrition Services

With a referral from a Campus Wellness physician or nurse practitioner, our registered dietitian provides individual counselling if you have nutrition or food-related health concerns.

  • Disordered eating
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Diabetes
  • Vegetarian diets
  • Food allergies, Lactose intolerance, Celiac disease, nutrient deficiencies
  • Elevated cholesterol
  • + More, ask your physician or nurse practitioner for a referral.

Travel Services

Complete pre-travel consultations with physicians and nurses to facilitate safer travels and a healthy return. 

  • Vaccines to protect yourself against hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, meningitis, Japanese encephalitis, traveller's diarrhea, cholera, and more 

  • Food and water precautions 

  • When to treat travellers’ diarrhea with antibiotics 

  • How to protect yourself against insect-borne diseases 

  • How to prevent altitude sickness, motion sickness and jet lag 

  • What over-the-counter medications to take with you 

  • Boosters for tetanus, measles, mumps and rubella, or the influenza vaccine during regional outbreaks 

Gender-Affirming Care

A safe, non-judgmental and affirming place for 2STNBGNC+ students.

  • Starting and maintaining Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy (GAHT) 
  • Supporting documents and letters as needed, including  gender marker changes on legal identification, and primary and secondary letters of support for gender-affirming surgeries 
  • Mental health services, including single session and brief counselling  
  • Treatment and monitoring of temporary and chronic illness 
  • Coordination of care and referrals (including referrals for transition-related surgeries) 
  • Preventative care including vaccinations, birth control and screening for diseases (including PAPs, prostate, chest/breast exams

Prepare for your appointment

In-Person Appointments

  • Arrive 10 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow for check-in and preparation.

Virtual Appointments

  • Ensure you are in a private, quiet location with a reliable connection.

  • Be prepared to answer a call from a blocked or unknown number during your scheduled time window.

What to bring

  • Student or health card: Bring your student ID and provincial health card (or proof of coverage).

  • List of medications: Include any prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements you take.

  • Health history details: Note any allergies, past medical conditions, surgeries, or significant family health history.

  • Referral or test results: Bring any recent lab work, imaging reports, or referral documents if you have them.

  • Immunization record: Helpful for routine checkups or travel health appointments.

  • Questions or concerns: Write down what you’d like to discuss so you don’t forget during your visit.

  • Payment method (if applicable): Some services may not be fully covered by insurance.

  • A list of current symptoms: Include how long you’ve had them, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect your daily life.

What to expect

  • Personalized care: Your provider will take time to understand your health concerns, symptoms, and overall well-being.

  • Medical history review: You may be asked about your health background, medications, allergies, or past treatments.

  • Physical assessment: Depending on your concern, your provider may perform an exam (such as checking blood pressure, heart, lungs, or other relevant areas).

  • Discussion of symptoms and lifestyle: Expect open conversation about your day-to-day habits, stress levels, sleep, diet, and exercise.

  • Testing and diagnostics: Your provider may recommend lab tests, imaging, or screenings if needed.

  • Treatment plan: Together, you’ll discuss next steps — such as prescriptions, referrals, follow-up visits, or self-care strategies.

  • Confidentiality and respect: Everything you share is private and treated with care.

  • Time for questions: You’ll have the chance to ask about anything related to your health or the care you’re receiving.

Primary care after graduation

Leaving the University in the next six months?

Campus Wellness, Health Services (including the Family Health and Student Medical Clinics) are able to serve you and your family while you are a registered University of Waterloo student, visiting scholar or post-doctoral student. 

  • Within six (6) months of graduation or completion of your contract with the University, your health care and the health care of your family members must be transferred to a physician off campus. 
  • If you are on academic hiatus and plan to return to your studies within the next six (6) months, you are welcome to continue your health care with our physicians and nurses.
