59. 50th Anniversary Gneiss

French River near Sudbury, Ontario. Donated by Jose Melo of Allstone Quarry Products, Schomberg, Ontario.

This rock was donated, as part of the Faculty of Science celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the University of Waterloo in 1957. A plaque celebrating 50 Faculty of Science alumni will be attached to the rock in the spring of 2008.

50th Anniversary Gneiss in the Peter Russell Rock Garden

This rock was installed in the Peter Russell Rock Garden September, 25, 2007.

Allstone Quarry Products built the largest inukshuk in the world recently using this rock. The Inukshuk will appear in the 2009 edition of the Guinness Book of Records.

Placing the 50th anniversary gneiss in the Peter Russell Rock Garden

It takes two bulldozers to move it! The four tonne rock was slid into place on wooden supports by the two bulldozers. This rock was at the limit of the capacity of the equipment used.
