Anthracite coal, sedimentary rock, Pennsylvania. Coal is formed as trees and other plant material dropped into a swamp. This organic debris many metres thick was preserved from decay by the anoxic conditions in the mud. This material was then compacted by the weight of the overlying sedimentary rocks.
