ERG research on the effect of river damming on nutrient ratios featured in Eos

Friday, September 18, 2020

The paper Global Dam‐Driven Changes to Riverine N:P:Si Ratios Delivered to the Coastal Ocean published in Geophysical Research Letters was selected as a Research Spotlight by AGU’s weekly magazine Eos. In this paper, ERG researchers Taylor Maavara (now at Yale University), Zahra Akbarzadeh and Philippe Van Cappellen assess how the damming of rivers is not only affecting the absolute but also the relative flows of the macronutrients nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and silicon (Si) carried by rivers to the sea. They show that by altering the ratios of these elements, dams have a major impact on nutrient limitation patterns in the coastal zone (see also August 3 News item).
