A new publication entitled, “Sulfate Mobility in Fen Peat and Its Impact on the Release of Solutes”, considers the effects of subsidence and seawater intrusion on the decomposition of organic matter in coastal peatlands. This collaborative study, co-authored by ERG members Heather Townsend and Fereidoun Rezanezhad, and researchers from the Baltic TRANSCOAST, utilized an innovative flow-through reactor system in order to characterize the effects of elevated sulfate concentrations on peats of varying degrees of decomposition. Conclusions of this study emphasize the importance of peatlands for water quality for future climate scenarios. The full article can be accessed online here.
