Philippe and Jovana talk to CBC Ottawa about freshwater salinization
CBC Ottawa reached out to the Ecohydrology Research Group to comment on the release of a report of the Ottawa Riverkeeper, a non-profit that advocates for the sustainable use of the Ottawa River. The report presents synthesizes a five-year study on the impact of road salt on tributary streams of the Ottawa River in the National Capital Region. The results of the study show systematic high chloride concentrations, often well above the safety level for aquatic life. In the interview, Philippe Van Cappellen and Jovana Radosavljevic commented on the results and confirmed that streams, lakes and groundwater in urban areas of Southern Ontario generally suffer from elevated chloride levels. They also discussed some of the possible solutions that should be implemented to avoid the negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems.
