The Government of Canada awarded $78 Million through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund to support the Global Water Futures (GWF) research program, led by the University of Saskatchewan.

GWF provides Canada with an urgently needed coordinated, research-driven approach to manage and sustain its freshwater resources in light of the rapidly changing environmental conditions in cold regions. GWF brings together water researchers from 18 Canadian Universities and colleges with more than 140 partners from around the world to address current and future water-related challenges in cold regions.

As a major partner, the University of Waterloo will receive $15M of the CFREF funding. Philippe Van Cappellen will lead the Waterloo effort, collaborating with colleagues in the Water Institute.
