This mandatory one-hour training is for faculty hiring committee members. It encompasses reviewing standard terms, designing equity-centered recruitment and selection practices, and discussing accountability frameworks for equitable recruitment, selection, and retention.

Mental health impacts us all. Each of us has a role in supporting the mental health of those within our communities. In this workshop, Recognizing and Responding to a Person in Distress, we aim to give the University of Waterloo students and employees the skills and confidence to support others (students and colleagues) who may be in distress. We will focus on recognizing the signals of a person in distress, effectively responding with care and empathy and understand how to refer to resources within the community. It can be challenging to find the words to support a person in distress. This workshop aims to equip participants with tools, strategies, and resources that increase our capacity to help in challenging situations.

Who can attend? This session is open to Employees This training teaches participants how to recognize and support someone who may be having thoughts of suicide. It is an education and awareness program that provides direction as to how to Question a person with thoughts of suicide, how to Persuade them to get help, and how to Refer the person to appropriate professional resources. Training Content: How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be having thoughts of suicide How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide Common causes and warning signs How to get help for someone in crisis

This is a two-part virtual workshop that journeys through First Nations, Inuit, and Métis relations with settlers. As the title indicates, you don't know what you don't know so everyone is welcome. You will be introduced to the concept of Miskasowin (wholistic self-evaluation) that will define content, context, and relationship promoting further action, accountability, and responsibilities as a treaty person in this land now known as Canada.

Join a dynamic and thought-provoking presentation on the intersectionality within the 2SLGBTQIA+ workplace inclusion. Speakers will explore the ways in which different social identities intersect and impact the experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, and share strategies for promoting intersectional inclusion and advocacy. This event is perfect for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of intersectionality and learn how to better support and uplift diverse voices within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

In this workshop, you will learn about trauma-informed pedagogy: teaching practices that are informed by an understanding of trauma, its prevalence, and its impact on learning. We will discuss some strategies you can take as a TA to support all students, especially those who have experienced trauma.

Participants with and without trauma experience are welcome to attend and connect. While discussions on the topic of trauma can be difficult, you won’t be asked to share your personal experiences and you are invited to take a break at any time throughout the workshop.

This workshop is a 101 course for those that are looking to get a baseline
understanding of core foundational concepts and frameworks as it relates to anti-racism, addressing disclosures of racism and bystander intervention.


Workshop Description:

This is a 3-hr introductory workshop to help staff & faculty develop a sense of accountability and understanding of the pervasive nature of racism within the Institution. The workshop will provide a high-level overview of racism and how to support someone who has experienced racism (through informal or formal mechanisms).

Do you have women in your life? Mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, friends, classmates? By age 18, 1 in 3 women will have experienced some form of sexual harassment/assault. As society learns more about the causes, both direct causes such as breaking consent, and indirect causes like systems that benefit men and blame victims/survivors for what happened to them, it’s important to learn about these causes and how you can contribute to preventing them. It’s not just to show the people around you that you want them to lead a life free of gender-based violence and the many barriers it creates, but it also shows students, co-workers and future employers that you’ve invested in equity work. These sessions will provide information on ways you can actively use your privilege to better address both systemic and everyday forms of gender-based and sexual violence. Please note: This certificate is available to male identifying participants only.

Level:Introductory

This is a 3-hr introductory workshop to help staff/faculty build their understanding on how to work towards creating inclusive spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. The workshop will cover key terminology and concepts, provide a historical overview which informs how we can communicate with care, and will enhance knowledge on how to build Trans Inclusive Spaces on campus.

This workshop will support researchers (whether with small research groups or large research teams) as they develop core competencies in the creation of inclusive cultures in research environments using data-driven, evidence informed approaches. Through interactive sessions, participants will learn about systemic barriers in research and how they limit innovation, creativity and diverse approaches to complex problems. In addition, participants will learn about tools and strategies for identifying and removing barriers to inclusion, creating cultures of care that attract, retain and promote diverse talent and enhancing impact and rigour in all their research activities.
