"Kímmapiiyipitssini: The Meaning of Empathy" Virtual Screening and Panel

This event is free for ACWS members, staff, and shelter clients. Open to the public by donation, with all proceeds going to the Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association.

Kímmapiiyipitssini (Blackfoot): GEE-maa-bee-bit-sin — giving kindness to each other

The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters is committed to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and the safety of Indigenous women, their families and their communities.

On National Indigenous Peoples' Day on June 21, ACWS is hosting a virtual screening of Kímmapiiyipitssini: The Meaning of Empathy followed by a post-screening discussion moderated by Leigh Sheldon, featuring Dr. Tailfeathers and other special guests.

The film is an intimate portrait of survival, love and the collective work of healing in the Kainai First Nation in Southern Alberta, a Blackfoot community facing the impacts of substance use and a drug-poisoning epidemic. This event is presented in partnership by the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters, the Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association, and the National Film Board.

Pride Month 2022 - Why is there no Straight Pride Month?

In this workshop we’ll discuss the origins of PRIDE, and unpack the many layers that led to today's celebrations/honoring of PRIDE. And, we’ll talk about the power imbalance inherent in any conversation about whether or not to even have a PRIDE month. In doing so, we will attempt to finally put an end to the question; "BUT WHEN IS STRAIGHT PRIDE MONTH?".
