About Inspiring Diversity in STEM @ Western University

Diverse perspectives are important for scientific research and innovation, yet there is a lack of diversity and an underrepresentation of minority groups across the scientific fields. Moreover, individuals from minority groups face systemic and disproportionate barriers when pursuing a career in the sciences. We aim to inspire, engage, and empower any individual considering a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Importantly, we also educate community members about gender, racial, and class bias and the systemic barriers that minority groups have faced beginning from early childhood. Our mission is to help break down the barriers faced by minority groups by educating the community on best hiring practices and student evaluations, highlighting representative role models, cultivating early research skills, and providing a supportive community. Together, we are building an inclusive community dedicated to helping future leaders achieve their goals.

The Inspiring Diversity in STEM 2022 Conference will feature an outstanding line up of keynote speakers, academic skills workshops, undergraduate poster competition, graduate program expo, and industry expo.

Please note, due to the nature of the ongoing pandemic, we have made the decision that this year’s IDSTEM conference will be virtual. We are committed to bringing you an an excellent and interactive virtual conference. More details will be announced as the conference date approaches.

The Engendering Success in STEM (ESS) Consortium is launching Quant-TIDE (Quantitative Training for Intersectional Diversity in Engineering). Quant-TIDE is a 5-day online training conference in quantitative methods where students will learn the Fundamentals of Deep Learning (Dr. Muhammad Abdul-Mageed, University of British Columbia), Multilevel Models (Dr. Sabrina Thai, Brock University), and Structural Equation Models (Dr. Joanne Chung, University of Toronto) on the first three days and a grant-writing workshop on the last two days, geared toward grant writing in the Canadian context. Selected students will receive a $500 award to support their attendance. 

Quant-TIDE is an EDII initiative within the broader gender diversity efforts of the ESS Consortium. Funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council, the ESS Consortium promotes gender diversity in Canadian STEM. Quant-TIDE is an attempt to recognize the different experiences of women and gender minorities with intersecting gender, race or ethnicity, LGBTQ2S+, socioeconomic, or disability identities in STEM.
