Getting started

In order to access and use the equipment in the Engineering Student Shops, users must complete the required safety training courses including WHMIS 2015 and the Engineering Student Machine Shop (ESMS) Safety Orientation course

Training focuses on using equipment safely and avoiding potentially dangerous situations, and no one is allowed to use any equipment unless they have completed both of these training requirements.

The Safety Orientation course is a self-paced, online course that is divided into six different content modules as follows:

  1. Introductory shop safety and procedures
  2. Band saw safety
  3. Drill press safety
  4. Milling machine safety
  5. Lathe safety
  6. Additional equipment

Each module includes a quiz that tests what has been learned and a grade of 100% is required to pass each quiz. Once a quiz is successfully completed a user is allowed to proceed to the next module. Upon completion of all the modules the user will be granted an access card to use the Engineering Student Shops.
