Volunteer to help with Renison's Meet & Greet events!

We are looking for University of Waterloo students who have completed a minimum of their 1A academic term to volunteer with our Renison Meet & Greet events!  We are hosting a virtual Meet and Greet for our Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (eSTEM) program as well as  an in-person Meet and Greet for students in our Intensive Bridge to Academic Success in English (iBASE) program.

Time commitment

We are looking for volunteers who are willing to attend one or both1-hour Meet & Greet events:

  • In person at Renison: iBASE Meet & Greet on Thursday, August 3 from 4:00pm – 5:00pm ET (ENG, SCI, MATH, ENV and ARTS students only) in the Renison Atrium
  • Online: eSTEM Meet & Greet on Wednesday, August 9 from 9:00pm – 10:00pm ET (ENG, SCI, MATH students only) via Zoom (online)

Who is the event for?

Renison University College is hosting the event for students registered in our newest program called English, Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (eSTEM) and students in our Intensive Bridge to Academic Success in English (iBASE) program.

eSTEM students are English Language Learners studying in high school (mostly in China and Canada) and are considering if they would like to study at the University of Waterloo in the future. They are taking our eSTEM program to learn more about UWaterloo and practice their English language skills.

iBASE students are admitted University of Waterloo students who need to complete an English Language program before they start their first year in their undergraduate program this September. They are taking the iBASE program to improve their English skills and be introduced to student life at UWaterloo.

What am I expected to do?

We are looking for positive and enthusiastic University of Waterloo students in all faculties (Arts, Engineering, Environment, Health, Math and Science) to volunteer and talk about their experience at the UWaterloo by attending an in-person event or virtual event through Zoom.

At the online event, we will break everybody into breakout chatrooms depending on their faculty.

You will be asked to provide a small introduction about yourself: who are you, what are you studying at UWaterloo, why you chose your program, and what do you like about being a University of Waterloo student.

From there, you will welcome students to ask questions about your student experience. The type of things you may be asked about:

  • Your program: what you are studying, what your program is like, why you chose your program
  • Your courses: what classes are you taking, what are they like, and any advice for incoming first-year students to prepare for the program
  • Life in Canada: what it is like in the city of Waterloo, what is the University campus like, what is Canadian culture like
  • Campus life: what it's like to study at the University of Waterloo (especially in person), what ways you have gotten involved on campus, what the culture of the University is like

The goal of our event is to help our students feel more excited about University life at the University of Waterloo, and hear advice from Waterloo students about success in university. Additionally, another goal is that we hope our students will practice asking questions to someone using their language skills.

We are very grateful for your participation! Thank you for considering to be part of our events.

Our iBASE students need to interview a student by asking a couple of questions about their degree program. Would you be comfortable with us sharing your email with our iBASE students so they may contact you to ask about your program?
