Learn English through culture
General English at Renison (GEAR) is a dynamic short-term program designed to help you develop your real-world English language skills while engaging in the vibrant life of Waterloo Region and the University of Waterloo. GEAR emphasizes practical, everyday English, focusing on speaking and listening skills to boost your confidence while engaging in conversation.
In your classes, you will be supported by peer helpers who offer opportunities to practice your English while providing friendly guidance and local insight. Whether you're preparing for future study, work, or travel, GEAR empowers you to communicate with confidence and to connect with others inside and outside the classroom.
Beyond the classroom, GEAR connects you with the community through cultural experiences, campus events, group outings, and opportunities to live with a local homestay family – reinforcing your learning in fun, meaningful ways. With our flexible, pay-as-you-go structure for weekend and after-class activities, you can tailor your experience by choosing to participate in those that best align with your goals and interests.
The GEAR Impact
"My English has improved throughout the GEAR program. Through classes and homestay, I learned both academic and practical English...when you hear 'English program', you may imagine we'll focus only on English. In the GEAR program, of course, we learn English, but it also provides us with many chances to join activities that we have never experienced!"
