In order to facilitate the continuing education of all the Faculty of Environment staff, the following guidelines have been established:
- Where possible, staff are to be encouraged to take courses offered by the University of Waterloo.
- The desire to take a course during working hours will be discussed with the supervisor and/or department chair/director prior to registration in the course. As per University Policy 4, the department chair/director will decide whether time off during normal working hours to attend courses can be granted.
- Where there is interest on the part of more than one staff member in a particular unit in taking courses, the supervisor or the person responsible for the unit (chair/director, etc.) will determine the scheduling of absences such that the normal working operations of the unit are not impaired. If too many requests occur in one unit, it may be necessary for allocation of leave time to occur on a term (fall, winter, spring) basis.
- Any payment for such courses will normally be the responsibility of the person taking the course. Exceptions may occur at the discretion of the chair/director for courses directly related to the work of the individual as described in University Policy 4.
