(2005) - Queer Anti-Capitalism: What's Left of Lesbian and Gay Liberation? - Alan Sears

A few months prior to the legalization of same-sex marriage in Canada (July 2005), Sears wrote about the gradual movement towards 2SLGBTQIA+ rights. Society had finally reached a point where civil rights such as the legalization of same-sex marriages and 2SLGBTQIA+ cultural visibility were being generally accepted. At the same time, Sears acknowledges that the constant narrative of demobilization has historically led to a lack of resources, particularly for more vulnerable populations such as queer people of colour, low-income families, women, and people living with disabilities, among others. He then goes on to say that although a marginalized perspective is a necessary but not sufficient tool to analyze contemporary issues and alongside those perspectives, attention should be given to class relations and divisions of labour, state regulation, and how capitalist restructuring has shaped up our culture.

In short, changes in state policies have created certain openings for queer civil rights, yet at the same time queers have been caught up in new forms of coercive policing. The net result has been an intensification of existing polarizations within queer communities.
