(2012) - Under Siege in Somalia - Hawa Abdi
This chapter, Under Siege in Somalia, recounts Abdi's encounter with armed soldiers and albeit brief, but frightening, apprehension of her sanctuary. She goes through the multi-day siege and describes the terror-filled air as armed soldiers took ahold of their space. Her resiliency kept with her, as she counted on external sources to get media coverage to eventually negotiate her way out of the siege and return back to her role as a doctor and caregiver for the displaced.
I hope my story will inspire other women in conflict zones around the world to feel empowered enough to look death in the eye and pursue their rights with quiet determination. This will take time, since discrimination against women is a part of the culture in our country and many other.
