Audience: Students, Faculty and Staff
Facilitor: Janice Jo Lee
Level: Intermediate
This workshop is for those that have a basic understanding of equity and anti-oppression frameworks and would like to further their knowledge.
Workshop Description
Systemic racism is experienced as oppression, harm, violence and grief. It is our responsibility to understand our role, and strategize for long-term listening, learning, and action. We will contextualize ourselves locally in Waterloo Region, map out our position and power as individuals living within communities and systems and reflect on our relation to global colonialism. At the end of this interactive workshop, you will leave with a draft action plan. We will practice active listening, relationship-building and create a judgement-free zone.
Learning Outcomes
- Deepen our personal understanding of lived experiences, racism, and interpersonal racist conflict
- Unpack language and jargon surrounding diversity, inclusion and equity
- Gain tools for relationship building through active listening and practicing trust
- Value and understand the emotional experience of racist harm and grief
