Research project description

Interested in creating sustainable energy systems for vibrant economies and happy communities? Professor Jessie Ma is looking for MASc/MES students and/or PhD students at the University of Waterloo to join us in exploring deep electrification through distributed energy resources. Preference will be given to candidates with legal status in Canada (e.g., Canadians, permanent residents, valid work permit, etc.). Students can join us in either Systems Design Engineering (SYDE) in the Faculty of Engineering or the School of Environment, Enterprise, and Development (SEED) in the Faculty of Environment.

  • Power systems economics
  • Energy policy
  • Energy regulation
  • Distributed energy resources

Qualifications and ideal student profile

Prospective graduate student researchers must meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements for the programs connected to this opportunity. In addition to minimum requirements, the research supervisor is looking for the following qualifications and student profile.

SYDE requirements:

  • Degree(s) in electrical engineering or related field
  • Background in power systems planning/scheduling and/or communications 

SEED requirements:

  • Degree(s) in economics, political science, management, or related field
  • Background in electricity policy and/or regulation

All positions require strong oral and written communications skills.

Exceptional PhD students for SYDE can be considered for the prestigious Cornfield Sustainable Systems Design PhD Fellowship.
