Not only has gaming become a massively popular spectator sport, even universities are growing their varsity rosters with e-sports teams. Add physical distancing requirements due to COVID-19, and gaming rates will continue to soar.
These trends are what makes the work of Recreation and Leisure PhD student Joseph Todd so relevant. Inspired by personal experience, Joe aspires to have a career in gaming research and influence change in the industry. Ultimately, he hopes that he can enhance the spaces that foster online communities and help more gamers develop rewarding and life-long friendships, just as he did.
