Welcome to the Haptic Computing Lab!

There are a few administrative steps that all new members need to complete to get set up in the lab and begin their research. If you have any questions, please contact Oliver.

  1. Email Oliver with the following:
    1. Your preferred email to join the Games Institute Slack. Once you're part of the Slack, please direct message (DM) Oliver to request joining the following channels: #group-hapticlab, #group-hci, #event-reminders-hci, and any project channels that are appropriate for your work. You may also want to join of of these useful channels: #topic-equipment, #social-events, #help-statistics, #help-experiments-and-studies, #event-writing-review-circle, and #event channels for possible targets to your work (CHI, UIST, Haptics Symposium, etc.)
    2. The following information for the Haptic Lab website: a photo, a short bio, and if you are comfortable, your pronouns (e.g., she/her, they/them). You can send this via slack if you prefer, once you sign up.
    3. Your WatIAm ID so that Oliver can add you to the HCI Wiki on the Waterloo HCI Team.
  2. Subscribe to the hapticlab mailing list (hapticlab @ lists.uwaterloo.ca) by following this link: https://lists.uwaterloo.ca/mailman/listinfo/hapticlab
  3. Start attending HX Lab Meetings (mandatory for graduate students and coops, optional for URAs and volunteers but recommended that you go at least once) and if available, the GI/HCI meetings. Both are held weekly, with the time changing each term depending on everyone's schedules
  4. Sign up for NextCloud, the cloud file server we use for all project information (hosted on Waterloo servers). You can login via nextcloud.uwaterloo.ca, or use NextCloud as a desktop application (e.g., synchronized folders) by following these instructions:
    1. Contact ecresearch (CC'ing Oliver) with your WatIAm ID and ask to be added to the NextCloud system; Oliver will need to confirm this request

    2. Download the NextCloud client at https://ecresearch.uwaterloo.ca/nextcloud/

    3. Add the server: https://ecresearch.uwaterloo.ca/nextcloud

    4. Log in with your WatIAm Credentials

    5. (If login fails, email Oliver (oliver.schneider@uwaterloo.ca) with your WatIAm ID to remind him to add you to the hapticlab group)

    6. Email/Slack Oliver (oliver.schneider@uwaterloo.ca) and request the “HapticLab” shared folder, any relevant project folders for your projects (e.g., the Haptiverse folder), and, if you need more space for personal file servers, a personal folder (e.g., “Schneider, Oliver”). Note that Oliver will have access to the personal file server, but that you will have a higher quota for files

    7. You can then customize synchronization to save space on your machine

  5. Make sure you complete the TCPS 2 Core Tutorial to receive essential ethics training for HCI research in Canada. Once completed, please send the certificate to Oliver

That's it!
