- Indicators
of
overall
population
health
and
the
distribution
of
health
tell
us
much
about
how
well
a
society
is
doing.
The
WHO
Commission
on
Social
Determinants
of
Health
advocated
for
action
on
the
wider
social,
economic,
political,
and
cultural
determinants
of
health
in
order
to
improve
population
health
and
reduce
health
inequalities.
Sir
Michael
will
discuss
learning
from
the
Strategic
Review
of
Health
Inequalities
in
England
(Marmot
Review)
and
the
recently
published
Review
of
Social
Determinants
and
the
Health
Divide
in
the
European
Region
and
how
it
can
be
applied
in
different
contexts
nationally
and
locally
to
build
fairer
and
healthier
societies.
Sir
Michael
Marmot
has
led
research
groups
on
health
inequalities
for
over
35
years,
and
is
widely
seen
as
a
leader
in
the
study
of
the
social
determinants
of
health.
His
work
on
the
Whitehall
Studies
helped
to
establish
the
existence
of
social
gradients
in
health,
and
contributed
to
a
dramatic
change
in
how
we
view
health
promotion.
He
has
chaired
the
World
Health
Organisation’s
Commission
on
the
Social
Determinants
of
Health,
and
is
the
Director
of
the
Institute
of
Health
Equity.
