2014 Hagey Lecture - Fair Society, Healthy Lives

Monday, November 3, 2014 8:00 pm - 8:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)
The 2014 Hagey Lecture presented by Professor Sir Michael Marmot - Indicators of overall population health and the distribution of health tell us much about how well a society is doing. The WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health advocated for action on the wider social, economic, political, and cultural determinants of health in order to improve population health and reduce health inequalities. Sir Michael will discuss learning from the Strategic Review of Health Inequalities in England (Marmot Review) and the recently published Review of Social Determinants and the Health Divide in the European Region and how it can be applied in different contexts nationally and locally to build fairer and healthier societies.
Sir Michael Marmot has led research groups on health inequalities for over 35 years, and is widely seen  as a leader in the study of the social determinants of health. His work on the Whitehall Studies helped to establish the existence of social gradients in health, and contributed to a dramatic change in how we view health promotion. He has chaired the World Health Organisation’s Commission on the  Social Determinants of Health,  and is the Director of the  Institute of Health Equity.
