Life in local government with Alumnus Jeff Bunn

Monday, March 23, 2015

Last week, Jeff Bunn shared some insight into his co-op experience and public service career with the MPS Class of 2016.

“The co-op process was a bumpy ride for me, but it didn’t hinder me from continuing to try.” Jeff encouraged the students to “take a proactive approach to co-op” and “connect with business leaders, public servants, and politicians”. As a result of reaching out to his local councillor and showcasing the skills he had to offer as a Master of Public Service student, Jeff secured a four-month co-op work term as Assistant to the Director of Legislative Services for the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.

Only two weeks into his co-op work term, Bradford West Gwillimbury was faced with large-scale flooding that threatened the town’s farmlands and major infrastructure. While his department was pre-occupied with the flooding, Jeff toured the disaster zone with Premier Wynne, and played an important role in applying to the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program.

When faced with greater responsibility, Jeff quickly impressed others with his capabilities. He was assigned the role of Information and Privacy Coordinator and then successfully competed for the positions of Committee Coordinator and Municipal Elections Coordinator. Jeff’s four-month co-op experience turned into a full-time permanent contract, and eventually shaped his career.

Currently, Jeff is the Deputy Clerk of the Town of Tillsonburg. His notable accomplishments include coordinating the designation of a municipal and provincial heritage site, drafting and implementing a Public Engagement Policy, and running the 2014 municipal election for the town. He has even married 27 couples to date!

Jeff’s MPS co-op experience helped him realize his passion for working in local government. When asked why local government specifically, he replied,

It’s the closest to the people. I like being able to build and shape the local identity of my community. You also ensure smaller voices are heard and you get to witness the quick impact of municipal decisions.”

His talk helped the students see that the knowledge and skills they have learned in class, partnered with hard work and co-op work term opportunities can lead to a successful, rewarding career in the public service.
