Why did you choose Waterloo’s Master of Public Service program?
I chose the MPS program because it afforded me a unique experience that was unmatched nationwide. The MPS program is one of a kind in the sense that it is the only program designed to “prepare” individuals to work within the public sector. From the course offerings and teaching staff to access to arguably one of the most innovative and connected cooperative education programs in the world, I felt comfortable right from the start that I made the right choice.
Why do you want to work in the public service?
I want to work within the public service because I want to play an active role in servicing the economy and citizens alike. Being fortunate enough to have been born and raised in Toronto, I feel that if I am given an opportunity to make a difference and it would be my honour to do so.
Further, a dynamic workforce that is not driven by profit margin is a work environment that I love being part of. Most public sector employees share one common goal - civil liberty - and because of that, we are able to work in unison to help make our economy a better place
What is your dream public service career?
Being a Deputy Minister or Assistant Deputy Minister or Director are all great positions that are achieved by very few; I plan to turn my dreams into realities one day at a time.
What was it like to be a Waterloo MPS student?
As a Waterloo MPS student, we are often privileged to have a professional learning atmosphere, and to be surrounded by like-minded individuals. Because of this, you will as I did, be able to develop a support system with peers in the classroom to help each other out. A networking system is essential in the classroom and even more important in the working world; take every opportunity you can get.
Also, you are lucky enough to have access to top-level teaching staff with the sole purpose of teaching you everything they know in their respective disciplines. Because of this learning, MPS students have been and will continue to remain to be some of the most prepared and studious employees to enter the public service.
What are your favourite MPS moments?
- MPS Prom
- Gala
- Mixer
- Photo shoot day
- Essentially, every single class with Frederick Bird
- Celebrating with Dr. Henstra at the end of term gala
- Getting to share memories and reminisce with Sheila on the final day before moving back home
What did you learn about yourself in the last nine months?
To never stop believing…
What advice would you give to someone who is interested in the program?
If you want to work in the public sector, there is not a program better geared towards preparing you with all the required skills than MPS.
What other wisdom do you wish to impart onto others?
Life comes with obstacles; however, in finding the solution you are your biggest obstacle, yet your biggest asset.
Lastly, hard work beats talent when talent gets lazy.
