Thursday Talk: Thinking about Violence and Nonviolence

Thursday, January 18, 2024 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Part One: 60 Years On

Room 2201, 12:00PM - 1:00PM

In the 1960s, significant social movements for nonviolence, justice, peace, and civil rights were in the news.  Yet the 1960s were also marked by persistent systemic violence, oppression, and war. In this session we focus on conscientious objection, delving into the motivations, strategies, and societal impacts of those who have refused - and those who continue to refuse - to be drafted into military service. Through examining case studies and global perspectives over the last 60 years, we will ask questions of how (and, if) a diverse range of resistance movements have played a pivotal role in shaping social and political landscapes.

Thursday Talks are presented by MPACS and ask "what's changed?" in the past 60 years, in conjunction with Grebel's 60th anniversary celebrations.

Speakers: Paul Heidebrecht and Eric Lepp
