Change to email throttling policy

Email Sending Limit Update

To help protect email services and ensure reliable delivery for all users, Information Systems & Technology (IST) is updating the daily email sending limit for individual accounts.

Effective Monday, May 4, the maximum number of emails an individual can send within a 24‑hour period will be reduced from 10,000 to 500 emails.

What is impacted

  • Distribution lists and Microsoft 365 groups are not affected by this change and remain the recommended way to send high volume or mass communications.
  • Accounts using smtp.uwaterloo.ca to send email to Microsoft 365 will be subject to this new sending limit.

What you need to do

If your role requires sending a high volume of email:

  • Use distribution lists or groups whenever possible
  • Review your current email sending practices to ensure they align with this change.

If you believe the work of your team or unit will require an exception to this policy, or if you have questions about the change, please submit a ticket through the IST Help Portal.
