SCREEN Validation Study

Aim:

Determine if a nutrition risk screening tool (SCREEN) works well to identify nutrition challenges for older adults living in retirement homes and in older adults with diagnosed memory problems, cognitive impairment or dementia.

We are recruiting:

  1. Older adults (55+) living in the community.
    • Living with memory loss, cognitive impairment or dementia 
    • Have a care partner who can report eating behaviours and support the person with memory loss to participate
  2. Older adults (55+) living in a retirement residence
    • They must have lived in the retirement home for at least 3 months
    • They must receive 2 or more meals each day from the retirement home

What would participation involve?

  1. A phone call to determine if they are eligible to participate
  2. A total of 3 study visits at your home or at the Universtiy of Waterloo:
    1. Visit 1: will be ~1 hour. Health information and complete a nutrition questionnaire. The participant will also be asked to record their food and beverage intake for 1 day.
    2. Visit 2: will be ~1 hour. We will Collect body measurement and cognitive assessments. We will also review your food record and complete the nutrition questionnaire
    3. Visit 3: ~1 hour with a dietitian to do a nutrition assessment. The participant will receive individualized tips to improve their food intake and nutrition

In appreciation of your time, you will receive a $25 gift certificate for a grocery store/pharmacy or a gift of equal value.

This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through the University of Waterloo (ORE#42827) and University of Guelph (REB#22-07-23) Research Ethics boards.
