Copyright and Licensing (Creative Commons and Ontario Commons Licenses)

Tuesday, March 7, 2023 10:00 am - 10:45 am EST (GMT -05:00)

Speaker: Dana Francoeur (copy editor, CEL)

Copyright can be an intimidating subject for most of us, its legalese only enhancing its complexity. The objective of this presentation is to clear away the clutter that has encouraged avoidance and instead help you better understand how copyright applies to you and your individual projects. We will discuss what copyright means for us at the University of Waterloo; how to determine if a source you wish to use is legitimate versus when it is not; what exceptions/exemptions exist within copyright law and how to use them to our advantage; and finally how to apply attribution effectively using either credit lines or citations. Hopefully by the end of this presentation you will feel better equipped to handle the question of copyright the next time it arises.
